Bakuchiol is a plant-derived compound from Psoralea corylifolia, marketed as a gentler alternative to retinol. It appears to work through some of the same gene-expression pathways as retinoids but without the typical irritation, dryness, or sun sensitivity.
Evidence Level
Promising. A 2018 head-to-head study vs retinol showed comparable anti-aging results with less irritation. Research is growing but still decades behind retinol's clinical depth. Best suited to people who have tried retinol and found it intolerable.
